| Replacing the old 156 is the Brera’s more practical and business-like sibling, the 159.
While we’d all like to think we can tool around in an insanely sexy coupe like the Alfa Romeo Brera; fact is most people need a bit more space. Luckily, the brand-new chassis and 4x4 drivetrain under the Brera can also be had in a saloon. It’s the 159, the replacement for the 156. And it’s no shabby looker itself.
You can see the 156 in the 159’s shape. But the distinctive six-lamp nose is straight off the Brera, and the tail is higher and more square to give a bigger boot. The new chassis squats bullishly on its wide track, and rolls on big wheels: 17s are the smallest option. The wheelbase is longer than a Brera’s, of course.
Inside, the dash is shared with the Brera, and it develops the themes of the 156 – hooded speedo and rev-counter, and a trio of round dials and vents on the console. Once more, quality improvements are claimed, vital in s car that tacklesthe Audi A4. What’s under the hood? Brand-new JTS direct-injection petrol engines including a 1.9 (160bhp), a 2.2 (185bhp) and a 3.2 V6 making 260bhp. Diesels are 1.9 (150bhp) and five-cylinder 2.4 (200bhp).
It’s six-speed transmissions all the way, as manual, Selespeed paddle-shift and auto. The most powerful engines have the 4x4 option. Better anti-dive geometry for the suspension is meant to banish the 156 problem of grounding the front on a bucking road. | | | Approximate Total Weight: 1265 Kg | Current Stock Level: 2 |
